Meet the Bug You Should Not Kill: The Misunderstood House Centipede

A house centipede can cause panic when it is seen. It may appear on the floor, behind a door, or inside a cupboard. Its fast movements and many legs can bring fear. Up to 15 pairs of legs are carried by this insect, and it can move 1.3 feet in just one second. Most people do not welcome it, and it is often chased with a shoe or a magazine. But the situation should be seen differently. This insect can be useful and should not be killed right away.

The Truth About House Centipedes

The house centipede is not dangerous to humans. No poison is carried that can harm people. It does not spread diseases. It does not bite often, and when it does, the pain feels like a bee sting. The bite can be cleaned and treated with ice and antiseptic.

This insect is often feared, but fear is not needed. It can actually help protect the home. Other pests are hunted by house centipedes. Termites, cockroaches, spiders, flies, moths, and carpet beetles are hunted and killed by them. These pests can cause more harm than the centipede itself.

The centipede uses its front legs to inject venom. Its legs also trap prey like a lasso. Hunting is done quietly, mostly at night. Its presence can mean that other bugs are being controlled without chemicals or sprays.

A Cleaner Insect Than Most

Many bugs leave behind webs, droppings, or nests. This does not happen with house centipedes. No mess is created. Furniture and clothing are not chewed or damaged. The centipede only looks for prey and then hides. It stays quiet and keeps out of sight most of the time

Because of this, the centipede is a better houseguest than spiders or ants. It is not aggressive. It is only interested in eating other bugs. It does not want to bother people.

Why They Enter Homes

These creatures are attracted by moisture and warmth. When the weather is cold, they look for shelter indoors. Basements, bathrooms, and kitchens are often used as hiding places. These areas stay warm and damp.

The presence of centipedes usually means that other insects are also living nearby. If prey is found inside, the centipede will stay and feed. So, a centipede can be a warning sign. It may show that cockroaches or silverfish are already inside the house.

How to Keep Centipedes Away Without Killing Them

Some people may still want to avoid having centipedes indoors. That is okay. They can be kept out without being harmed. Simple changes can be made inside the home to stop them from coming in.

1. Remove Moisture

Centipedes like damp places. Dry conditions will make them leave. A dehumidifier can be used in basements and bathrooms. Fans can be added to increase airflow. Leaks should be fixed. Damp walls, floors, and corners should be dried. Sinks and tubs should be checked for proper drainage. Puddles should be wiped up right away.

2. Remove Their Food Source

If no other bugs are found, centipedes will go away. Food sources such as ants, spiders, and flies must be removed. Crumbs and trash should be cleaned daily. Spider webs should be swept away. Bugs should not be allowed to breed indoors.

3. Seal All Entry Points

Cracks and holes can let centipedes in. These spaces must be sealed. Doors, windows, pipes, and walls should be checked. Any gaps should be closed with caulk or weather stripping. Screens should be repaired. Vents should be checked and closed tightly.

Natural Ways to Deter Centipedes

Killing is not always needed. There are natural ways to stop centipedes from entering or staying.

Sticky traps can be placed along walls and in corners. They can catch bugs without poison. Essential oils like tea tree, peppermint, or citrus can be used as sprays. Their smell keeps bugs away. Baking soda can be sprinkled in damp areas. It helps to absorb moisture and reduce insect activity.
Diatomaceous earth is another option. It is made from crushed fossils. It dries out insects that walk through it. It can be sprinkled in cracks and along baseboards. After 24 hours, it can be vacuumed.
