St. Tongue

This appears to be a condition called Black Hairy Tongue. It occurs when the tiny bumps on your tongue (called papillae) grow longer than normal and trap bacteria, food, or other particles, leading to discoloration. Despite its alarming appearance, this condition is generally harmless.

Causes:

•Poor oral hygiene

•Smoking or chewing tobacco

•Certain medications (e.g., antibiotics)

•Excessive coffee or tea consumption

•Dehydration or dry mouth

•Overuse of alcohol-based mouthwashes

Treatment:

•Brush your tongue gently with a soft toothbrush or use a tongue scraper.

•Maintain good oral hygiene (brush twice daily, floss, and rinse).

•Stay hydrated and avoid substances that could worsen the condition, like tobacco or heavy coffee intake.

•If the condition persists, consult a dentist or healthcare professional.

While it looks unusual, it’s often reversible with proper care.
