Lady stitches 40 fabric squares. How she quilts them looks COZY on her bed

A patchwork quilt made from 40 fabric squares is a cozy and charming addition to any bedroom decor. It brings a touch of handmade warmth that can transform a room into a comforting haven. Crafting your own quilt at home not only saves money but also allows you to infuse personal style and creativity into your bedroom. Quilting can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby that yields a beautiful, functional product you can cherish for years.
This DIY quilt can be styled in numerous ways to complement your bedroom’s interior design. For a rustic or farmhouse look, opt for squares in muted, earth-toned fabrics. If your style leans towards the modern, consider bold, geometric patterns that make a statement. The quilt can be draped over the end of the bed, folded thoughtfully to showcase different patterns, or entirely spread out to serve as a primary bed cover. Adding a few matching pillow shams can enhance the cohesive look of your bedding ensemble.

Directions
Start by selecting and cutting 40 fabric squares, each measuring 6×6 inches. Mix and match patterns and colors as desired.
Lay out the fabric squares in a 5×8 grid pattern on a flat surface to plan the layout.
Begin sewing the squares together in rows using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sew all rows in this manner.
Press the seams of each row with an iron to set them flat.
Join the rows together by sewing them with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, ensuring the seams between squares align neatly.
After sewing all the rows together, press the entire quilt top with the iron to ensure it lays flat.
Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric on a flat surface. Secure the layers with pins to prevent shifting.
Using the sewing machine, quilt through all layers. You can quilt straight lines, follow the seams, or create a pattern depending on your preference.
Trim any excess batting and backing fabric to match the edges of the quilt top.
Bind the edges of the quilt by sewing a double-fold binding strip around the perimeter. This can be done by hand or sewing machine.
Once the binding is attached, give the quilt a final press with the iron.
Variations & Tips
To customize this quilt further, consider varying the size of the fabric squares or the overall quilt dimensions to fit different bed sizes. You could also experiment with different quilting techniques such as free-motion quilting for more intricate designs. Add a personal touch by incorporating fabric that holds sentimental value, like old clothing or special textile remnants. Alternatively, enhance the quilt’s texture by using fabrics of different materials, like combining cotton with flannel or velvet for a plush, cozy feel.
